As the Western Organizer, Kate works with volunteers, activists, and partner organizations in the community to hold our elected officials accountable for the decisions that they make regarding our natural resources and works to draw attention to important conservation issues in and around Western Wisconsin.

I am a conservation voter because climate change is scary. Every day we don’t act is another day climate change continues to worsen.

My story

I grew up in a family of public servants. Both of my parents were county social workers and my brother was a county jail correctional officer. We were always oriented around the social good but were sure to take some spare time to enjoy nature. My family loved to camp, fish, hunt, garden, and generally experience the outdoors. They instilled in me a respect for our environment at an early age.

I pursued a bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, continuing the family tradition of public service. Halfway through school, I took on a minor in environmental science and, as I learned about the social and environmental issues we face, I began to understand how interconnected they are.

Environmental issues perpetuate social issues and vice versa. The people in the world who are most affected by social issues are disproportionately affected by environmental issues. I began to realize that my responsibility as a social worker demanded a responsibility to the environment as well. This sentiment has really driven me to strive to be a strong advocate for our environment and our society.
