Conservationists Host Standing Room Only Anniversary Celebration
MADISON – Today, Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters celebrated its 15th anniversary with an inspiring visit from nationally acclaimed climate change activist Reverend Lennox Yearwood, the youth editors of Simpson Street Free Press, and a standing room-only crowd of members, friends, and conservation advocates at “Revving it up For Conservation.”
Called one of our country’s “New Green Heroes” by Rolling Stone and named as one of the Top 10 Change Makers in the green movement by Huffington Post, Reverend “The Rev” Yearwood’s innovative climate and clean energy work has garnered the Hip Hop Caucus support from Vice President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, League of Conservation Voters, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, and Bill McKibben’s 350.org.
The event included a special award ceremony honoring the work of the Simpson Street Free Press – an after school program that grows writing and critical thinking skills and builds community advocates. The Simpson Street Free Press will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year.
Executive Director Kerry Schumann had this to say about the night:
“Tonight was a time to celebrate Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters’ 15 years protecting Wisconsin’s natural resources, and an opportunity to recognize the growing power of the conservation movement. Rev. Lennox Yearwood’s message of unity in the face of growing environmental threats and his call for solidarity in the fight for clean air, clean water, and social justice are more important than ever. We are thrilled to honor Simpson Street Free Press for their environmental reporting and for growing community advocates for the past 25 years. And, to our members, who are our true heroes, we reserve the greatest thank you of all.”
