Bill Description

Sulfide mining is responsible for poisoning the environment with toxic waste like arsenic, mercury, and lead – dangerous carcinogens and neurotoxins. SB 395 & AB 499 eliminates Wisconsin’s “Prove It Safe” mining law that protects public health and natural resources by requiring mining companies to show a demonstrated track record on protecting water quality before being permitted. Given the long-term and guaranteed toxic nature of the waste generated by sulfide mining, it is critical we place a higher standard for demonstrating protection of our waters, not less.
