AB 499/SB 395: Industrial Acid Mining Bill
This bill is:
September 01, 2017
Land, Priority Issue, Water
Sulfide mining is responsible for poisoning the environment with toxic waste like arsenic, mercury, and lead – dangerous carcinogens and neurotoxins. SB 395 & AB 499 eliminates Wisconsin’s “Prove It First” mining law that protects public health and natural resources by requiring mining companies to show a demonstrated track record on protecting water quality before being permitted. Given the long-term and guaranteed toxic nature of the waste generated by sulfide mining, it is critical we place a higher standard for demonstrating protection of our waters, not less.
SB 395 was introduced and referred to the Senate Committee on Sporting Heritage, Mining, and Forestry. It had a public hearing on September 7, 2017. It was voted out of committee on October 4, 2017. AB 499 was introduced and referred to the Assembly Committee on Labor. The bill had a public hearing on October 13, 2017, and voted out of committee on October 31th. It passed the full Assembly on November 2, 2017. The bill was approved by the full Senate on November 7, 2017. It was into law by the Governor on December 11, 2017.
