Bill Description

The passage of 2013 Wisconsin Act 1 opened up the possibility that mining companies could obtain authorization from the DNR to mine lakebeds situated close to or over mineral deposits. Such activities would significantly impact families who enjoy these lakes for recreation, drastically reduce property values, and irreparably harm businesses that rely on tourism revenue. AB 214 & SB 152 would protect the lakebeds in Wisconsin lakes, flowages, and reservoirs by prohibiting these waterbodies from being destroyed, drained, or filled in by mining activities.

Current Status

AB 214 was introduced and referred to the Assembly Committee on Rural Development and Mining. SB 152 was introduced and referred to the Senate Committee on Sporting Heritage, Mining, and Forestry. The bill died at the end of session.
