Stevens Point Common Council unanimously passes resolution committing the city to 100 percent clean energy and carbon neutrality by 2050

STEVENS POINT – Last night, the Stevens Point Common Council unanimously voted to pass a resolution committing the city to 100 percent clean energy and carbon neutrality by 2050. The passage of this resolution is thanks to the support and dedication of residents, business owners, local elected officials, city staff, and community leaders.
Wisconsin Conservation Voters Central Organizer Maxwell Johnson made this statement about the resolution:
“Over 350 residents signed a petition supporting this resolution, and for over a year, community members, city officials, and common council members worked together to draft the resolution. Our city will be a cleaner and healthier place to live because of their efforts.
This work began long before I came to Stevens Point. For example, Mary McComb, former member of the council, spoke of her work back in the late 2000s on sustainability and how this resolution is a continuation of her work. She has been advocating for climate action for decades and last night we did just that.
Council members and community members spoke about why the city needs a strong commitment to 100 percent clean energy and carbon neutrality, and called for an investment in our future.
This work is just beginning. Next month, the common council will vote on the creation of a sustainability committee and, later this summer, Mayor Mike Wiza will appoint community leaders to begin working on a climate action plan.”
