PRIORITY CAMPAIGN

Tell Rep. Van Orden: OUR BILLS ARE TOO DAMN HIGH

Wisconsin families are paying the price while MAGA extremists like Rep. Derrick Van Orden continue to prioritize billionaires and corporate profits. Rep. Van Orden promised to bring down prices and make our lives easier. Instead, he voted for a massive law that gives handouts to corporations while making our monthly bills go up.

Rep. Van Orden has voted to:

  • Raise your electricity bill
  • Eliminate good paying jobs in clean energy and manufacturing
  • Take Medicaid away from millions of Americans, which means higher medical costs for all of us
  • Provide massive giveaways and tax cuts to polluters and billionaires, while forcing people like us to pay more

The problem

Energy prices are soaring in Wisconsin and across the country, squeezing our wallets at the same time other costs like healthcare and groceries are increasing. Due to rising demand from data centers, the Trump Administration's cuts to affordable clean energy, and forcing aging fossil fuel power plants to stay open long past their prime, energy costs will likely continue to rise until something is done.

Wisconsinites deserve clean, affordable energy to keep the lights on and heat their homes. However, the Trump Administration is prioritizing corporate profits over wallets and health.

Rather than making deals in back rooms, we should be bringing the community together so we have an understanding of our pathway forward.

Clean energy is the fastest deployable form of energy – and the least expensive

Solar, wind, and geothermal are clean forms of energy that are reliable, can be built quickly to meet demand, and are affordable. For example, utility scale solar can be developed in as little as a couple years and can be done in phases so it can start producing electricity before a project is fully complete.

Fossil fuels costs us money and our health

Greenhouse gas emissions increase the rate of asthma, heart disease, and heat related illness. Nearly 47 million Americans live within a mile of fossil fuel infrastructure, exposing them to increased health risks. Continuing to use expensive fossil fuel plants that cause pollution for our energy is costing us.

We need to turn the tide on energy

Data centers and increased energy demand from the rest of the economy is straining our electricity grid and raising our prices. The Trump Administration is propping up an outdated and expensive fossil fuel industry to serve corporate polluters over everyday people. The Energy Bills Relief Act would take the steps necessary to rapidly deploy affordable clean energy, modernize our electricity grid, and prevent Donald Trump from punishing clean energy for the sake of corporate polluters.

The Solution: Pass the Energy Bills Relief Act

Wisconsinites deserve relief from rising energy costs. Our lawmakers should pass the Energy Bills Relief Act to help Wisconsin families feeling the burden of rising energy costs. Instead, MAGA extremist Rep. Derrick Van Orden is giving handouts to billionaires and corporations.

The Energy Bills Relief Act will lower soaring costs by:

  • Boosting clean energy deployment to increase energy supply. Clean energy is cleaner, cheaper, and faster to build. More clean energy means lower bills.
  • Motivating electric utilities to launch programs to save customers money
  • Providing utility bill payment assistance to millions of households
  • Supporting home weatherization and other efficiency programs
  • Ensuring the cost of powering large energy users, like data centers, doesn’t fall on households and small businesses.

Reverse attacks on affordable clean energy by:

  • Restoring clean energy tax credits that helped homeowners, renters, businesses, schools, and governments to invest in solar, geothermal, and energy efficiency
  • Preventing Trump and future administrations from arbitrarily blocking clean energy projects that would meet demand and reduce costs
  • Stopping Donald Trump and future administrations from needlessly extending the life of inefficient fossil fuel plants that pollute and cost more money to keep open than to close
  • Expanding access to community solar projects for individuals, businesses, nonprofits, states local governments, and tribal governments

Why it matters

Wisconsin’s electrical grid is facing never-before-seen challenges that are impacting everyday consumers negatively. We need a consumer-first policy that doesn’t place corporate profits first and people second. The Energy Bills Relief Act would quickly deploy affordable, reliable, clean energy that would protect ratepayers for increasing utility bills.

Tell Rep. Van Orden that enough is enough.
