Bill Description
The right to vote is a fundamental aspect of our democracy. Wisconsin should be finding ways to ensure that every person eligible to vote has access to the ballot. SJR 2 & AJR 1 work against this goal by proposing a constitutional amendment that would bake our discriminatory voter ID law into the Wisconsin Constitution. This would disproportionately impact voters of color, transgender voters, voters with disabilities, and low-income voters.
Current Status
SJR 2 was introduced on Jan. 6, 2025, and referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety. A public hearing was held on Jan. 7., 2025, it passed out of committee on Jan. 7, 2025, and it passed the Senate on Jan. 8, 2025.
AJR 1 was introduced on Jan. 6, 2025, and referred to the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections. A public hearing was held on Jan. 8, 2025, it passed out of committee on Jan. 9, 2025, and SJR 2 passed the Assembly on Jan. 14, 2025.
The Governor does not take action on constitutional amendments.
Wisconsin voters approved this constitutional amendment in the Apr. 2025 election.
