Bill Description
Corporations shouldn't have control over our process for setting environmental standards. SB 289 & AB 277 would let corporations block new environmental standards by focusing solely on the cost to businesses while ignoring the health, environmental, and long-term economic benefits of stronger protections.
Current Status
SB 289 was introduced on May 21, 2025, and referred to the Senate Committee on Licensing, Regulatory Reform, State and Federal Affairs. It received a public hearing on Oct. 9, 2025, passed out of committee on Nov. 7, 2025, and passed the Senate on Feb. 11, 2026.
AB 277 was introduced on May 30, 2025, and referred to the Assembly Committee on Government Operations, Accountability, and Transparency. It received a public hearing on Oct. 9, 2025, and passed out of committee on Nov. 18, 2025. SB 289 passed the Assembly on Feb. 12, 2026.
Gov. Evers vetoed SB 289 on Mar. 20, 2026.
