SB 420 & AB 421 : Preventing local governments from passing rights of nature ordinances

Bill Description

Local governments are at the forefront of strategies that ensure Wisconsin is home to clean air, safe water, healthy soils, and rich biodiversity. SB 420 and AB 421 would undermine local control and limit local governments’ ability to protect our environment by preventing our cities, towns, and villages from enacting ordinances they see fit.


Current Status

SB 420 was introduced on Sept. 4, 2025, and referred to the Senate Committee on Transportation and Local Government. A public hearing was held on Dec. 9, 2025.

AB 421 was introduced on Sept. 15, 2025, and referred to the Assembly Committee on Judiciary. It is available to be scheduled for a public hearing
