AB 248 & SB 249 : Specifying vacancies in appointive state offices

Bill Description

Unless reappointed, officials in public office shouldn’t be able to stay in their position once their term expires. AB 248 & SB 249 specify that a vacancy is created when an official’s term expires.


Current Status

AB 248 was introduced on May 8, 2025, and referred to the Assembly Committee on State Affairs. A public hearing was held on Nov. 12, 2025, the bill passed out of committee on Nov. 20, 2025, and passed the Assembly via voice vote on Feb. 19, 2026.

SB 249 was introduced on May 9, 2025, and referred to the Senate Committee on Licensing, Regulatory Reform, State and Federal Affairs. A public hearing was held on Mar. 11, 2026, and the bill passed out of committee on Mar. 12, 2026. The Senate passed AB 248 on Mar. 17, 2026.

Gov. Evers vetoed AB 248 on Apr. 3, 2026.
