SB 729 & AB 722 : The Data Center Accountability Act

Bill Description

If data centers are coming to Wisconsin, they should cover their added energy costs, rely on renewable power as much as possible, and be transparent about their water and energy use. SB 729 & AB 722 would require data centers to source at least 70 percent of their electricity from renewable energy to qualify for state tax exemptions, ensure that data centers are paying for all the costs attributed to their energy use, and provide transparency about water and energy use.


Current Status

SB 729 was introduced on Dec. 2, 2025, and referred to the Senate Committee on Utilities, Technology and Tourism. Is is available to be scheduled for a public hearing.

AB 722 was introduced on Dec. 3, 2025, and referred to the Assembly Committee on Energy and Utilities. It is available to be scheduled for a public hearing.
