Conservation voters laud new legislative maps

Feb 19, 2024

MADISON – Gov. Tony Evers signed into law new legislative district maps today. These new maps will help rectify more than a decade of GOP-gerrymandering for many Wisconsin communities.

Civic Engagement Director Anjali Bhasin said this of the new law:

“This is a huge victory for democracy in Wisconsin. The new maps will return some much needed balance to the state’s legislative districts. With fair maps, the legislature will be more accountable to their constituents and focus on the issues communities care most about: access to clean water, climate action, and the freedom to vote.

This is the culmination of nearly a decade of work to reverse actions taken in the Walker Era meant to permanently install a stranglehold on Wisconsin’s democracy and future. Gov. Evers is ushering in the end of that era, and a bright new beginning for Wisconsin.”

Executive Director Kerry Schumann said this on the signing:

“Wisconsinites have been struggling with contaminated drinking water that the GOP-led legislature refuses to take meaningful action on. Wisconsin’s freedom to vote is under near constant attack by the same politicians. Climate change is having dire effects in Wisconsin, while the legislature in its current form has its head in the sand and its hands in the pockets of corporate polluters.

This is a new day in Wisconsin. The state’s true political shades can now come into better focus. The current cabal of corporate hand-picked shoo-ins in the GOP-gerrymandered legislature will face the power of a better democracy – accountability, competition, the freedom to choose our own representatives in state government.”
