AB 796 : Developing New Facilities with Transparency and Accountability

Bill Description

Low-income households, and particularly low-income households of color, are disproportionately more likely to live in spaces where they are drinking poisoned water, breathing toxic air, and more immediately exposed to the potential impacts of climate change. AB 796 is an important step toward ensuring that Wisconsin doesn’t develop new facilities that makes this problem even worse by prohibiting the Department of Natural Resources from issuing certain permits for the operation of a facility that is located in a vulnerable community, unless the permit applicant complies with certain reporting requirements. This will help expose potential environmental injustices, and ensure impacted communities have an opportunity to have a say in the process.

Current Status

AB 796 was introduced on December 8, 2023, and referred to the Assembly Committee on Environment. It is available to be scheduled for a public hearing.
