Bill Description
Our elections officials are responsible for making voting as accessible as possible. Budget shortfalls can hinder their ability to do that. AJR 77 & SJR 78 would make voting access even harder by proposing a constitutional amendment that would prohibit elections officials from using donations and grants for elections administration.
Current Status
AJR 77 was introduced on September 29, 2023, and referred to the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections. It is available to be scheduled for a public hearing. SJR 78 was introduced on October 16, 2023 and referred to the senate Committee on Shared Revenue, Elections and Consumer Protection. A joint public hearing was held on October 24, 2023. AJR 77 passed out of committee on October 31, 2023. SJR 78 passed out of committee on November 2, 2023. SJR 78 passed the Senate on November 7, 2023. It passed the Assembly on November 9, 2023.
Because this was the second consideration of this proposed constitutional amendment, it will now be placed on the ballot of the April 2024 statewide election.
Vote against this constitutional amendment in April 2024.
